Volkswagen has big plans for the future of the Wolfsburg site as the automaker commits to a major investment of 460 million euros to the main Wolfsburg factory in the first months of 2025. CEO Thomas Schafer made this major announcement while on a job in Wolfsburg. Volkswagen will invest 460 million euros in preparations to start production of the new ID.3 electric car, an electric car that will roll off the assembly line in Wolfsburg in early 2023 and begin full production in 2024, with the ramp-up to be completed by the end of 2025. Volkswagen employees are already undergoing the necessary training for the production of the new Post-ID.3 Ramp-up, is another all-electric car that will make a major contribution to the utilization of Wolfsburg’s capacity for the production of electric vehicles in the long term. The Post-ID.3 Ramp-up will be introduced in the booming SUV segment. The new ID.3 has a Modular Electric Drive System (MEB) technical basis. Thanks to the large investment Volkswagen will be able to achieve substantial development as MEB+ and will be much more efficient.

The large donation, Volkswagen’s ongoing Trinity vehicle project becomes a major pillar for the Wolfsburg site. The Trinity Vehicle project will take inspiration from the future group-wide Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). Volkswagen plans to start manufacturing electric cars only in Wolfsburg at the beginning of next year and likewise in all factories located in Europe. Volkswagen’s initial step towards a more electric future is based on retooling the site for the ID.3 which will start rolling off the production line in Wolfsburg in 2023 and will also roll off the production line in Zwickau, starting full production in the largest factory of the entire Volkswagen group.

“Volkswagen stands for electromobility for everyone. And Wolfsburg will be part of this success story. Here alone, in our main plant, we will invest some 460 million euros by the beginning of 2025, preparing the factory for the MEB. The commissioning of the ID.3 01 is the first important step towards the electrification of our main plant,” announced Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and member of the board of the Volume brand group.

Volkswagen will implement the further development of the successful electric vehicle platform to the e-SUV, the MEB+, helping to put Volkswagen in an excellent position for the years to come. In 2020 an in-depth study of Volkswagen’s electric platform was conducted by analysts who came to the following conclusion “most impressive solution available from an established engine company” in the world of electric vehicles. MEB+ delivers a huge benefit to customers by enabling even faster-charging speeds and wider ranges. By the beginning of 2025 Volkswagens will be using the highly standardized unitized cell in the system, the cell was manufactured in the group’s factory in Salzgitter.

The new era of electric and sustainable mobility, Volkswagen launched a major brand strategy together with “Accelerate”. In addition, the “Energize” program helps this new strategy by giving a great impetus as the strategy moves forward. The strongest starting point for Volkswagen remains the Trinity model project featuring the highly scalable SSP platform. The project will be started in conjunction with the development of scalable software. Volkswagen is proposing to build a new factory in Wolfsburg, as the location for the production of the new ID.3 has not yet been determined.
