Volkswagen R is Lighter and More Efficient

Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Design collaborated to produce the cutting-edge forged wheel, which is available as an option for all new Golf R models. The wheels weigh less than 20 pounds each, making them roughly 20% lighter than equivalent alloy wheels. This guarantees flawless handling by lowering the unsprung masses. On June 26, the Warmenau performance wheel rim and the new Golf R models will make their global debuts.
“The ambitious weight target posed a major challenge for us, as the structural stability of the wheel rim is paramount. It took months and many iterations and simulations to find the right balance between strength and weight,” explains Volkswagen designer Ranbir Kalha.
We faced a significant obstacle in achieving the weight target since wheel rim structural stability is crucial. Finding the ideal ratio of strength to weight required months of trial and error, as Volkswagen designer Ranbir Kalha notes. There are ten overlapping rectangles at the center of the wheel rim design. A very large opening ratio of 71% has increased the wear resistance and stability. This lessens thermal load on the brakes by enabling even more efficient cooling, particularly on racetracks.
The Warmenau wheel rim has the name of the Volkswagen R headquarters, which is located in the Warmenau hamlet near Wolfsburg. The Volkswagen R comes with 235/35 tires and is offered in dark gray or black with a diamond-cut finish. The wheels on the original, sporty Golf R32 models served as inspiration for the design of the new performance rim. The sportiest cars that round out the lineup are produced by Volkswagen’s premium performance brand. 2023 set a record for VW R production with almost 35,000 vehicles produced. Since 2002, more than 300,000 R models have been shipped.
Volkswagen R is already realigning itself for the future: by 2030, the portfolio will progressively transition to all-electric R vehicles, founded on the four pillars of performance, design, innovation, and quality. As Volkswagen Individual GmbH, Volkswagen R was established in 2002. Within the Volkswagen brand, the department has operated as a distinct business entity since 2020. Even now, the letter R in the name stands for the love of racing and motorsports.
