Volkswagen is taking the next big step towards becoming a software-oriented mobility provider, delivering new updates over the air. The German automaker will be the first to update its vehicles every three months without the vehicle physically coming into the dealership. The first update is set to raise the level of functionality and other minor improvements such as lighting and infotainment operation updates. The updates will also include certain improvements based on customer feedback, making Volkswagen one of the only automakers in the world who put their buyers first. The ID. Digital project unit has been tasked with driving the development of the ID.family.
“Cars that always have the latest software on board and offer an excellent digital customer experience are extremely important for the future success of the Volkswagen brand,” Thomas Ulbrich, member of the Board of Management for Development at VW, explains. “We established the agile project unit ID. Digital specifically to enable us to continuously update software in the car. As such, we are able to quickly gather customer feedback and react flexibly to customer requirements.”
The project team’s approach will set new standards in the software maintenance industry, with shorter update cycles and flexible consideration of customer requirements. The ID.Software 2.1 comes standard on all 2021 vehicles, although some vehicles might need to stop in the service department one time if they are not equipped with software 2.1update initially. The first “Over-the-Air” updates are currently being tested throughout 3,000 company vehicles. The software updates are delivered via mobile data transfer, directly to the main high-performance computer on the ID. Models. When shopping for a vehicle, the software has increasingly become a factor and makes the difference between a purchase or a pass.
The first update is set to improve many different functions including the enhanced ID. Light, dynamic main beam control, as well as performance and stability improvements. The new electronics architecture is both more intelligent and powerful, but it also helps simplify the exchange of data and functions between systems in the vehicle. Volkswagen continues to push the limits of what the electric vehicle standard should be. The all-new fully electric 2021 ID.4 is one of the newest fully electric SUVs on the market, offering the latest technology, safety features, and performance. Ready to drive a new Volkswagen?
