Volkswagen Group of America Open’s New Hub in Freeport, Texas

The Texas port facility at Port Freeport celebrated its grand opening, as announced by Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA). In addition to creating more than 110 new direct jobs, this new Gulf Coast hub represents an approximate $114 million investment in the Freeport area through indirect employment in the trucking, rail, and vessel operations sectors.
Up to 140,000 Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche vehicles may be imported and processed at Port Freeport, supplying about 300 dealers throughout the Central and Western regions of the United States. VWGoA currently runs seven ports in the United States, including the Volkswagen Assembly Plant in Chattanooga, TN; Baltimore, MD; Benicia, CA; Davisville, RI; Jacksonville, FL; San Diego, CA; and two smaller facilities in Houston and Midlothian, Texas, which were combined to create the new Freeport location. Volkswagen Group of America’s sustainability ambitions are furthered by the usage of larger liquified natural gas (LNG) boats made possible by Port Freeport’s broader channel.
“Opening this new port facility in Freeport helps create a more resilient and more sustainable supply chain for many years to come,” said Anu Goel, Executive Vice President, Group After Sales & Services, VWGoA. “Additionally, Freeport’s easier access to rail and trucking will make our logistics operations more streamlined and efficient.”
To construct the site, KDC and PRP collaborated with VWGoA and Port Freeport. VWGoA and Brazosport College, in neighboring Lake Jackson, have teamed to launch a new certified program in logistics with a focus on Vehicle Logistics operations, in an effort to further strengthen the local talent pool. Future employment prospects in Brazoria County and at Port Freeport related to transportation, storage, and distribution will be supported by the development of initiatives like these in cooperation with regional partners.
