After an amazing decade of success with the American market, Volkswagen of America Inc has announced its plans to end production of the popular Passat. The halt in the assembly of the Passat sedan in Chattanooga will finish off with a last 2022 model. The main reason behind the stop is due to the Chattanooga plant receiving major transformations to build future electric vehicles. Volkswagen doesn’t stop there, the automaker will release a Limited Edition Passat that will join the lineup with Chattanooga-inspired details. Only 1973 Limited Editions will be built to represent its starting production year, with an MSRP of $31,290 (Plus destination fee), and will make specific color units based on Passat history. Let’s take a look at what Volkswagen has in store for the vehicle that helped plant the flag in the U.S.
“We’ve sold some version of the Passat for nearly 50 years, and the Passat launched our relationship with Chattanooga, which supports thousands of jobs,” said Scott Keogh, President, and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “With the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport in high demand, and the North American production launch of the all-electric ID.4 SUV next year, our future in Chattanooga looks brighter than ever.”
The 2022 Passat Limited Edition will offer four unique color combinations, each dedicated to paying homage to an aspect of the vehicle’s past. Aurora Red Metallic models with Titan Black interior will compose 411 units, representing the original vehicle production code. Next, Racing Green Metallic models with Mauro Brown interior will be number 423, for the Chattanooga, TN area code, and Pure White models with Mauro Brown interior will number 524 units, signifying the opening date of the Chattanooga Plant on May 24, 2011. To finish off the limited edition run, 615 Platinum Grey Metallic models with Titan Black interior will be produced in order to signify six generations of imported Passats, one generation assembled in Chattanooga, and five decades of U.S. sales.
The exterior of the Limited Edition will have distinctive wheels and mirror caps to differentiate the exclusiveness from the rest of the standard Passats. In addition, the limited edition will come standard with 18-inch wheels, power-folding mirrors, black mirror caps, and will feature LED headlights with Advanced Front-lighting System (AFS) and an easy-open trunk. Inside the Limited Edition Passat, buyers will find unique seat tags featuring “1 of 1973” on one side and “VW Chattanooga Since 2011” on the other. Special mats are added to cupholders featuring aerial maps of the city and an aerial line drawing of the Chattanooga factory. On top of that, Limited Edition models will be equipped with comfort sport seats with perforated Vienna leather seating surfaces, driver seat memory, power passenger seat, heated front, and rear seats, Discover Media infotainment with navigation, Fender® Premium Audio, Park Assist with front and rear Park Distance Control and Light Assist (High Beam Control for Headlights).
