Volkswagen and PowerCo SE Set Out To Build The Largest Battery Cell Factory in Canada

Volkswagen and PowerCo SE, a leading renewable energy supplier, have joined forces to build a battery cell factory in Canada. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 40 gigawatt-hours and have also announced the construction of their largest battery cell factory to date in Canada. The plant will take place in the province of Ontario and will have an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt hours. Construction of the factory is expected to begin in 2027. The construction of the battery cell factory in Canada is an important step for Volkswagen in furthering the company’s commitment to offering a wide range of electric vehicles.
“North America plays a key role in our global battery strategy. The region will become the second pillar of PowerCo SE next to Europe, with battery cells manufactured in North America for North America. The Gigafactory St. Thomas opens the door to a key market for electric mobility and battery cell production. Our goal is to make PowerCo a global player in the battery business and pave the way for clean and sustainable mobility,” announced Thomas Schmall, Member of the Board of Technology of the Volkswagen Group.
The company has committed to selling one million electric vehicles per year worldwide by 2025, and the construction of the battery cell factory in Canada will help Volkswagen reach that goal. The battery cell factory will also help Volkswagen to reduce Volkswagen’s carbon footprint and promote sustainability. The battery cells produced at the plant in Ontario will feed into Volkswagen’s electric vehicles worldwide, making the production of electric vehicles more efficient and environmentally friendly. Furthermore the battery cell factory in Canada would create local jobs and support the local economy. The plant is expected to create around 1,000 direct jobs and around 5,000 indirect jobs in the Ontario region. This is a great boost to the local economy, especially at a time when many people are struggling financially.
