Volkswagen continues to preserve the environment and now plans to convert all of its data centers carbon-neutral by 2027.  Volkswagen AG plans to achieve this goal by expanding Green Mountain’s computing capabilities at its Norwegian-based Green Mountain, a CO2-neutral data center operator. The expansion will involve more than half of Volkswagen’s global data centers and will allow to operate saving 10,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Volkswagen GA plans to accelerate the decarbonization strategy as it aims to make all global data centers carbon neutral by 2027. Volkswagen would bring forward its target by three years ahead of the European Green Deal as European data center operators agreed to make their data centers clinically neutral by 2030. For the target to be achieved by 2027 Volkswagen will expand the data center operations with the help of Green Mountain’s servers which run on 100 percent renewable electric power generated by hydroelectric power that is cooled by the adjacent ford.

Volkswagen and Green Mountain began their collaboration in 2019 when the automaker opened the data center at Green Mountain’s RJU1-Rjukan site located in Telemark, Norway. Both companies initially aimed to outsource high-performance computing projects such as crash test simulations, this would help free up capacity in Volkswagen’s data centers at the headquarters that is used for the company’s business-critical applications. Volkswagen has six data centers worldwide, three of those in Wolfsburg, two in Norway, and one in Singapore.

Volkswagen AG will achieve a quarter of the global computing power requirements without carbon emissions by expanding to Green Mountain’s SVG1-Rennesøy data center. This expansion would increase annual CO2 savings by 10,000 tons. Thanks to the renewable energy that Volkswagen will use at the Green Mountain operations center, it will be able to provide green energy to 500 homes per year. Green Mountain adapted an old NATO ammunition storage facility into a mountain room colocation data center for the new site at SVG1 on 22,600 m² of land. The infrastructure can be expanded to 2 x 26 MW of total capacity, of which Volkswagen will use 3 MW of capacity. To power the servers in the data centers and provide them with good cooling, between 40% and 80% of the electricity needed, SVG1-Rennesøy will take advantage of the adjacent deep water fjord that has a range of 100 meters, and the water in the fjord reaches a constant temperature of 8 degrees Celsius all year round.

Volkswagen AG was the first company in the automotive industry to participate in the Paris climate agreement in 2018. The automaker aims to be completely CO2 neutral by 2050, to achieve this goal Volkswagen plans to reduce 30% CO2 in 8 years. Currently, Volkswagen AG already has more than 90% renewable energy at its European manufacturing sites demonstrating. This demonstrates Volkswagen’s interest and commitment to helping the environment.
