The Volkswagen GTI has been known for being one of the quickest and most iconic vehicles ever. Fans all over the world have waited year after year to enjoy the newest updates and performance features the brand has to offer. The brand has produced many iconic vehicles including the Golf GTI, Scirocco GTI, Polo GTI, and now Volkswagen has announced that the GTI will enter the electric era. The first all-electric GTI concept was revealed at the IAA in Munich back in September 2023.

Joining the ID. Family with its fully electric concept, the ID. GTI can change the outline for electric sports vehicles. Although the “I” in the GTI name has stood for “Injection”, now the “I” will stand for “Intelligence”. Unleashing new capabilities the electric GTI will fulfill all of its fan’s wishes. The GTI concept has kept its same dynamic appearance and will continue to provide more performance. The GTI concept will use the ID.2 as a basis with a front-wheel-drive layout. Just like the ID.2, the GTI concept will stick around for quite some time.

“With the ID. GTI Concept, we are showing what a great future the GTI philosophy has at Volkswagen,” says Mindt. “In my opinion, the powerful ID.2 all is the perfect basis for an electric GTI. I already had the GTI in mind when I first put pen to paper for the ID. 2all. It is now becoming a reality and allows us to project the GTI idea into the new age of electric mobility.” said Andreas Mind

Andres Mindt has been Head of Design for the Volkswagen brand since the start of 2023, Mindt previously worked as Chief Designer at Bentley and also Head of Exterior Design at Audi. Mindt is responsible for designing one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models including the seventh-generation Golf and the first Tiguan. As the classic GTI, the new electric concept has kept the classic sporty racing look, and performance and has kept the vehicle at an affordable price. The electric GTI bumper was inspired by Motorsports and also features a black splitter in the middle with an air take above it with the classic honeycomb structure from the fifth-generation GTI.

The Volkswagen ID. GTI will mount the battery under the floor keeping a low center of gravity with available ergonomically designed seats using materials called Jack-e. The ID. GTI will share the MEB structure. The current 2023 Volkswagen GTI is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The 2023 GTI features a 10.3-inch gauge cluster and a 10.0-inch touchscreen where drivers can access features from music to performance statistics.
