Volkswagen is one of the world’s most recognized automotive brands, and have now announced a major restructuring of Volkswagen’s Sustainability unit. The company is committed to join the fight against climate change, and this reorganization is intended to help the company achieve its goals in this area. Volkswagen’s Sustainability unit is responsible for the implementation of sustainable policies and practices throughout the company. This ranges from reducing emissions to responsible management of natural resources and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workforce.Â
The restructuring of corporate sustainability aims to strengthen its role in the company and increase its effectiveness in achieving Volkswagen’s sustainability goals. This includes the creation of new positions and the integration of this unit into other key departments of the company. One of the main new developments is the creation of a Sustainability Director position, to be responsible for leading the company’s sustainability strategy and ensuring that it is implemented in all areas of the organization. This position will be filled by Julia Kuhn-Piëch, who has extensive experience in sustainability management in the corporate sector. In addition, the Sustainability unit will be integrated into key departments of the company, such as strategy, innovation, and supply chain management. This will enable better coordination and alignment of sustainability efforts across the company, from production to distribution to after-sales service. The improvement also gained greater collaboration with other stakeholders, such as suppliers, customers, and civil society organizations. Volkswagen is committed to working with these stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and address challenges related to climate change and sustainability in general. This reorganization is part of Volkswagen’s broader commitment to sustainability.Â
Volkswagen already pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and to reduce emissions from its vehicles by 30% by 2025 compared to 2015 levels. Additionally, Volkswagen unveiled plans to invest more than 30 billion in electric mobility and digitalization over the next five years. The Sustainability unit will play a key role in achieving these goals. The creation of the position of Chief Sustainability Officer and the integration of this unit into other key departments of the company cannot increase the effectiveness of Volkswagen’s sustainability strategy and accelerate progress toward carbon neutrality and other sustainability goals. The restructuring also shows Volkswagen’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its business practices. The company has been criticized in the past for its role in the diesel emissions scandal, and this reorganization shows an effort to improve the company’s image and reputation for sustainability.
